Spanish Government Backs Anti-Piracy Measures

The Spanish government has finally approved controversial anti-piracy measures aimed at the illegal downloading of copyrighted material on the Internet.
The law focuses on measures to shut down Web sites found to be hosting illegal content, and stops short of a law recently approved in France, under which individuals who illegally download copyrighted material could lose their Internet connections.

Music companies and other copyright owners want the government to enact a similar law in Spain. "We do not think just going against the Web sites can be effective," said Fabrice Benoît, managing director of Universal Music Spain.

Meanwhile, Internet service providers, bloggers and representatives of Web-based businesses do not support the government's proposal, even though, unlike in France, the Spanish proposal could not result in anyone being disconnected from the Internet.

"The Internet should be free and not have any interference from groups that seek to perpetuate obsolete business models and stop the free flow of human knowledge," opponents of the law said in a "manifesto" distributed on the Web.

Apart from the expected criticism and intense protests of the new law by Internet consumer groups, legal experts warn that the complexity of intellectual property rights issues will mean long trials and appeals, and it's not at all clear who would be responsible for costs to injured parties if they are found not to have infringed the law after all.

Do you think a government has the right to cut internet access to users who access pirated material?

I think that the goverment shouldn't cut internet acces users who access pirated material because this is where the people can listen music without buy it. But it's clear that the pirated must be controlled and goverment have to taken measurement for it.

In my opinion the government does not have right to cut the access to Internet because it is a way of communication and forms an of acceding to the information and culture. The laws must be hardened against I practise piracy but without managing to deprive ourselves of Internet.

From my point of view the goverment shouldn't cut internet acces, as the music in the market is very expensive and many teenagers don't have money to paid the discografy since we are in crisis, and the goverment can't take away our main source of information and communication.

Absolutely not. I think that governments can´t do this because the Internet is an essential part of our society. Moreover, today the majority of people perform this action. Therefore, these people should be censored by governments.

I don't agree with this because the government has more important problems than illegal downloads. If the access to internet of persons who participes of piracy is cut, the most part of the population will be without internet, and this would be a serious problem. I think the goverment only can try to finish with piracy servers.

I think that governments haven't got the right to cut us internet access for pirated material. I believe that should exist web sites where we can download free material and that artists and owners of this material get money for it because we are paying for internet connection

It's truth that downloading music is illegally and we shouldn't be complicit in piracy but, I think that goverment can't cut the internet to users because they are paying to this access. If goverment wants to stop piracy, authorities must act againts websites with illegal content.

i think that the govern can't prohibit the acces to internet because a lot of people that pirate the music are studient and don't have a lot of money for buy the music cd's and if the govern prohibit the access to this people, they will not study and not have a good formation.

I don't think the government should do this because if this happens, most people won't have access to one of the best ways to get information about many issues, so even if we like it or not, nowadays Internet has become a necessity for the population. All of this has disadvantages, including piracy, but I believe it should take less drastic measures to end it.

It's truth that downloading music is illegally but also it´s truth that Internet is a free for a lot of people. For this reason I think the government can not leave without the Internet to anyone because that person is also paying the internet service
